✒️ Ancient Athens, like other Greek city-states (poleis), did not employ a national flag in the modern vexillological sense. Instead, identification on the battlefield and in other official contexts relied on various symbols, emblems, and heraldic devices. For Athens, the most prominent symbol was the owl, sacred to its patron goddess Athena, which frequently appeared on Athenian coinage (such as the famous tetradrachms) and other artifacts. Another significant symbol was the olive tree, Athena's gift to the city, representing peace and prosperity. While Athenian warriors might have carried shields with individual or unit-specific blazons, or standards with these emblems, a unified "flag of ancient Athens" as understood today did not exist.
