✒️ During World War I, the Imperial German War Ensign (German: Reichskriegsflagge) served as the war flag and naval ensign of the German Empire. Building upon the flag of the North German Confederation, it featured a white field with a large black Nordic cross, fimbriated in white and black, which was offset towards the hoist. At the intersection of the cross, a white disc contained the Prussian eagle, crowned and often with the "FR" (for Fridericus Rex) monogram. In the canton (upper hoist corner), the black, white, and red tricolour of the German Empire was displayed, charged with a black Iron Cross. This complex design powerfully combined the Prussian military tradition with the national colors of the newly unified German Empire, symbolizing its formidable naval and military might.
