✒️ The national flag of South Africa during its period as a Dominion of the British Empire (1910-1961) and subsequently as the Republic of South Africa until 1994, was commonly known as the "Oranje, Blanje, Blou" (Afrikaans for "Orange, White, Blue"). This flag, adopted in 1928, featured horizontal stripes of orange, white, and blue, derived from the historical Dutch Prince's Flag. Crucially, centered within the white stripe were three smaller flags: the Union Jack (representing the United Kingdom), the flag of the Orange Free State, and the flag of the South African Republic (Transvaal). This design was a compromise intended to reconcile the country's British colonial heritage with the history of the Boer republics. However, due to its later strong association with the apartheid era, this flag became a divisive symbol and was replaced by the current multi-colored flag in 1994.
