✒️ While the Tokugawa Shogunate (1603-1868), the last feudal military government of Japan, did not have a single, universally recognized national flag in the same way modern nations do, a common maritime ensign associated with the shogunate, particularly in the 19th century, was a simple vertical tricolor of white-black-white. Individual daimyo (feudal lords) within the shogunate often used banners (sashimono) and flags bearing their personal mon (crests) for identification in battle and other contexts.
