Rhodesia flag (The British)
Custom Flag made with Flagmaker & Print. Learn more about our product line-up on the Product Details page.
The flag of Rhodesia (officially used from 1968 to 1979) consisted of three vertical stripes arranged green, white, and green, with the Rhodesian coat of arms centered on the white band. The green stripes symbolized agriculture, land, and the country’s natural environment, reflecting Rhodesia’s identity as a largely agrarian settler state. The central white stripe represented peace and stability.
The coat of arms featured several heraldic elements drawn from British colonial symbolism and local identity. It included a red lion passant above a shield displaying a golden pick and shovel crossed on a green background, representing mining and economic development. Beneath the shield were stylized elephant tusks, symbolizing African heritage and wildlife. The design intentionally combined British heraldic tradition with regional imagery to reinforce Rhodesia’s claim to legitimacy and permanence.
The flag replaced earlier British-style ensigns following Rhodesia’s Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) in 1965. It remained controversial internationally because Rhodesia was governed by a white minority regime and was not widely recognized as a sovereign state. The flag ceased official use when Rhodesia transitioned through Zimbabwe Rhodesia in 1979 and ultimately became the internationally recognized nation of Zimbabwe in 1980, adopting a new national flag reflecting majority rule and independence.
Our 3x5ft flags are made of 100% polyester knit; equipped with grommets for an authentic look and feel. This custom flag design is available as both a one-sided wall flag, or a double-sided display flag.
