✒️ Ternopil has been at the crossroads of empires for centuries. Passing between Polish, Austrian, and Russian hands. It was not until the first Weltkrieg that the Ukrainians in Ternopil got a chance to forge their own destiny. With Germany and the central powers coming out on top, Eastern Europe was redrawn. An independent Ukraine, under German influence, was broken off from the crumbling Russian Empire. However it was not until the Second Weltkrieg that the people of Ternopil saw their chance for true freedom. With Poland breaking away from the Germans and a reinvigorated Russia, Ukraine was broken apart from two fronts. Ternopil however held on, declaring an independent state. Poland was the first to recognize them as they had the idea of turning Ternopil into a buffer between the now reconquered Lviv, and a hostile Russia. Ternopil was transformed into a bustling trade hub between competing empires. With Polish guarantees and Russian goods powering its industry, Ternopil has remained an Important hive of activity in Eastern Europe. With Polish Lviv on one side and a Russian held Kyiv on the other, Ternopil makes it stand as the only free Ukrainian State.
