Makhnovia flag (Makhnovia)
Custom Flag made with Flagmaker & Print. Learn more about our product line-up on the Product Details page.
Editorial note, provided by P. Martin: The flag often referred to as "The Makhovshchina/Makhnovist/Makhnovia" flag is actually that of the Dnipro Division (Dnipro-Ukraine Division). This misidentification has persisted online, spreading widely due to a lack of accurately named Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine flags. More information can be found on Wikipedia.

The Makhnovshchina, an anarchist movement in Ukraine during the early 20th century, didn't have a single, official flag. However, their forces primarily utilized variations of black and red flags throughout the Ukrainian War of Independence (1917-1921). These flags often served a dual purpose: symbolizing anarchist and socialist ideals while also acting as a rallying point for specific insurgent units.
The most common design consisted of a horizontal bicolor with a black field above a red one. This echoed the broader anarchist movement's use of black, signifying opposition to established authority, and red, representing the struggle of the working class. Makhnovist flags frequently incorporated additional elements, such as white or gold lettering with slogans promoting anarchist principles or the name of the insurgent unit that carried the flag. Examples of these slogans included "Always with the oppressed against the oppressors" and "The emancipation of the workers is the affair of the workers themselves!"
It's important to note that the Makhnovshchina also used other flags during their struggle. There are documented instances where they employed national flags, such as the blue and yellow of Ukraine, and even instances where they flew alongside the flag of the White movement (opposing the Bolsheviks) due to temporary alliances.Â
Our 3x5ft flags are made of 100% polyester knit; equipped with grommets for an authentic look and feel. This custom flag design is available as both a one-sided wall flag, or a double-sided display flag.
