✒️ The Flag of Galicia (Bandeira de Galicia) is the official banner of the autonomous community of Galicia in Spain. The flag consists of a white field crossed diagonally from the upper-left (hoist) to the lower-right (fly) corner by a broad blue sash. The official institutional version of the flag, used for governmental purposes, is charged with the coat of arms of Galicia in the center. This coat of arms features a golden chalice with a silver host above it, surrounded by seven silver crosses on a blue field, all beneath a royal crown, symbolizing the historic seven provinces of the Kingdom of Galicia. The flag's origin dates back to the 19th century and is derived from the naval flag of the maritime province of A Coruña. The original design was a blue saltire (St. Andrew's cross) on a white background. However, to avoid confusion with the naval ensign of the Russian Empire, which used a similar design, the decision was made to remove one of the arms of the cross, resulting in the single diagonal band seen today. The design was embraced by Galician emigrant communities in the Americas, who saw it on ships arriving from their homeland and adopted it as a symbol for all of Galicia. It was officially recognized by the Royal Galician Academy in 1923 and formally adopted as the flag of the autonomous community.
