✒️ The "Starry Plough" flag, originally designed for the Irish Citizen Army (ICA), is a significant symbol in Irish history, particularly known for its association with the 1916 Easter Rising. The flag features a dark green field with the words "Irish Republic" emblazoned in a stylized gold font. The letters are designed in an uncial or Celtic-style script, a nod to ancient Irish manuscripts and a popular motif in the Celtic Revival movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The gold lettering on the green background evokes the national colours of Ireland, symbolizing the land itself ("the Emerald Isle") and its wealth. This specific flag, with the "Irish Republic" lettering, was flown during the Easter Rising of 1916 from the General Post Office in Dublin, alongside the Irish tricolour.
