✒️
The Free Iran flag, commonly used by segments of the Iranian opposition, is a horizontal tricolour of green, white, and red with the Lion and Sun emblem centered on the white band. The green stripe traditionally symbolizes growth and hope, the white peace and unity, and the red sacrifice and courage. The central emblem depicts a lion holding a sword with a rising sun behind it, a historic Persian symbol associated with sovereignty, strength, and Iranian identity. This design corresponds to the pre-1979 national flag of Iran, prior to the establishment of the Islamic Republic.
Historically, the Lion and Sun motif was used in various forms from the medieval period and became firmly established as a national emblem during the Safavid and Qajar dynasties, later continuing under the Pahlavi monarchy. Although the symbol became politically associated with the monarchy, it long predates modern Iranian kingship. Following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the emblem was removed and replaced with the current Islamic Republic symbol. In the 21st century, the Lion and Sun flag has been revived by Iranian opposition movements, particularly during periods of protest and civil unrest, where it functions as a symbol of resistance to the current Iranian regime and a broader call for a secular or democratic Iran.
