✒️ During the period of Francoist Spain (1939–1975), led by General Francisco Franco, the national flag of Spain remained the traditional red and yellow horizontal triband (Rojigualda), but with a significantly altered coat of arms. The most notable change occurred in 1945, when a new shield featuring the Eagle of Saint John the Evangelist, with its wings open and facing the hoist, was introduced. This eagle bore the Pillars of Hercules and a scroll with the motto "Una, Grande y Libre" (One, Great, and Free), reflecting the Nationalist regime's ideology of national unity, imperial grandeur, and authoritarian rule. This distinct version of the Spanish flag became a powerful symbol of Franco's dictatorship and is therefore often referred to as the "Francoist Flag."
