The design is derived from historical banners used in Wallachia and Moldavia and symbolizes liberty (blue), justice (yellow), and fraternity (red). Although the tricolor has been associated with Romania since the mid-19th century, it was officially adopted in its current form on December 27, 1989, following the fall of the communist regime. The flag closely resembles that of Chad, though the two nations use different shades of blue.
