Its crimson red field, bordered in blue, symbolizes the bravery of the Nepalese people and peace, respectively. The upper segment features a stylized white moon, while the lower contains a white, twelve-pointed sun, representing the coolness of the moon and the heat of the sun—symbolizing permanence and the hope that Nepal will last as long as these celestial bodies. Officially adopted on December 16, 1962, the current design is a modernized version of traditional flags used for over 2,000 years.
