On the fly side is the shield from the national coat of arms, which depicts a red cross on a white background with images representing agriculture, including a sugar cane, coconut palm, bananas, and a dove of peace. The light blue color represents the Pacific Ocean surrounding the islands. Officially adopted on October 10, 1970, upon independence, the flag reflects Fiji’s colonial heritage, natural environment, and national identity.
