The blue stripes symbolize the sky, opportunities, and perseverance; the white stripes represent peace, wisdom, and happiness; and the red stripe stands for the blood shed for freedom and the warmth of the Costa Rican people. The national coat of arms is often displayed on the red stripe near the hoist in the state and war flags. Officially adopted on November 27, 1906, the flag reflects Costa Rica’s values, natural beauty, and national pride.
