The blue symbolizes the Turkic heritage of the Azerbaijani people, the red represents progress and the development of a modern state, and the green signifies Islam, the dominant religion in the country. The white crescent and star reflect the nation's Islamic identity and cultural roots. The flag was originally adopted in 1918 by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and was reintroduced on February 5, 1991, following the country’s independence from the Soviet Union.
