The Iron Front (German: Eiserne Front) was a German paramilitary and extraparliamentary organization founded in 1931 during the turbulent years of the Weimar Republic. Comprising social democrats, trade unionists, and democratic socialists, the Iron Front was established to defend democratic institutions against the rise of totalitarian ideologies from both the far-right and far-left. It was particularly active in opposing the Nazi Party’s Sturmabteilung (SA) and the Communist Party’s Antifaschistische Aktion. Although formally independent, the Iron Front maintained close ties with the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), reflecting its commitment to parliamentary democracy and civil liberties.

One of the most enduring legacies of the Iron Front is the Three Arrows symbol, designed in 1932 as a visual counter to extremist propaganda. Representing opposition to monarchism, Nazism, and communism, the emblem was prominently used during the November 1932 elections and later adopted by the SPD as a symbol of democratic resistance. Today, the Three Arrows continue to be recognized globally as a powerful anti-authoritarian icon, often revived in modern anti-fascist and progressive movements. The Iron Front’s historical significance lies in its proactive stance against extremism and its defense of democratic values during one of Germany’s most politically volatile eras.
