✒️ The Ecology Flag is a symbol that gained prominence in the early 1970s, particularly among American environmentalists. Designed by Jack Shepherd and based on a symbol created by Ron Cobb, it typically features thirteen alternating green and white horizontal stripes, with a green canton in the upper hoist corner bearing a yellow or white Theta symbol (Θ). The green stripes and canton are said to represent unspoiled land and clean air, while the white stripes symbolize clean air. The Theta symbol, formed by superimposing the letters "E" (for environment) and "O" (for organism), is also associated with the Greek word thanatos (death), serving as a warning about threats to the environment. The flag's design deliberately mirrors that of the United States flag to emphasize the importance of ecological concerns within a national context, and it was notably used during the first Earth Day in 1970.
