✒️ The Christian Flag is an ecumenical flag designed in the early 20th century to represent all of Christianity and Christendom. Its design consists of a white field, symbolizing the purity, peace, and innocence of Jesus, with a blue canton in the upper hoist corner. The blue canton represents the waters of baptism, the faithfulness of Christ, and heaven. Within the canton is a red Latin cross, a prominent symbol of Christianity, which signifies the blood of Christ shed for the redemption of humanity and his sacrificial love. The flag is intentionally designed without patents or copyrights, making it free for use by any individual, church, or organization. The history of the Christian Flag began on September 26, 1897, at Brighton Chapel on Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. Charles C. Overton, a Sunday school superintendent, was forced to give an impromptu speech when a guest speaker failed to arrive. Using a nearby American flag as a visual aid, he discussed the symbolism of flags and proposed that Christians should have their own banner. Overton, along with missionary leader Ralph Diffendorfer, later promoted the design, which gradually gained acceptance. The U.S. Federal Council of Churches officially adopted the flag on January 23, 1942. Today, it is used worldwide by many Protestant, Evangelical, and some Catholic and Orthodox denominations as a symbol of Christian unity and allegiance to Christ.
