✒️ The flag commonly known as the ensign of Blackbeard is one of the most famous and symbolic pirate flags from the Golden Age of Piracy. Reportedly used by the infamous pirate Edward Teach, the design features a horned skeleton or devil on a black field. In one hand, the figure holds a flaming chalice, often interpreted as a toast to the devil, while its other hand holds a spear pointed toward a red, bleeding heart. The powerful symbolism was intended as a form of psychological warfare; the imagery of the devil spearing a heart was a clear visual threat, meant to intimidate merchant crews into surrendering without resistance, thus saving Blackbeard the time and resources of a violent conflict Despite its universal recognition, the historical authenticity of this specific flag design is disputed by maritime historians. Contemporary accounts from the period of Blackbeard's activity (c. 1716-1718) describe his ships flying black flags, sometimes with a "death's head" or as a solid black banner (a traditional Jolly Roger), but none mention this particular complex design. The earliest known image of this flag first appeared in a 1912 book, nearly two centuries after Blackbeard's death. Therefore, while this ensign is inextricably linked with the legend of Edward Teach, it is widely considered a later, romanticized invention rather than a historically accurate representation of the flag he personally flew.
