✒️ The Australian Federation Flag is a historical symbol of Australia's colonial identity and early nationalist aspirations, combining British heritage with regional symbolism. The Australian Federation Flag, also known as the New South Wales Ensign, was first proposed in 1831 by Captain Jacob Gronow, Harbour Master of Port Jackson, as a unifying emblem for the British colonies in Australia. The design features a blue cross on a white field, with the Union Jack in the canton and five white seven-pointed stars representing the Southern Cross constellation, a motif later echoed in the national flag. The Federation Flag was based on the earlier Colonial Flag of 1823, but distinguished itself with a blue cross instead of red and five stars instead of four. Its use was unofficial but widespread throughout the 19th century, especially among supporters of federation and Australian nationalism
